Hello dear readers!
Stepped on African ground for the first time after a dreadful flight by this German Airline, no names mentioned.... Funny, Cape Town is so remote, it just canīt be on Central European Time. But it really is, or just about. Itīs warm and pleasant and for most of us, itīs a thrill to be in Africa for real, so to speak. I got nothing against Morocco or Tunisia, but thatīs a whole different thing than the deep south. We are being greeted and welcomed by Paul, who turns out to be our main man on this visit. Heīs British, but lives down here at the moment, doing this and that. Right about now, heīs taking us to the hotel at the Cape Town Waterfront, very fancy indeed and very much right by the Atlantic ocean.
I am a total wreck from not sleeping at all on the flight, but we are scheduled for wine tasting and dinner in the Paarl valley, north-east of the city. A quick fresh-up and weīre all in Paulīs minibus again. The ride through town sort of reminds me of LA, the same highways running over a flat stretched-out landscape. Still there are no shanty towns in LA and you wonīt see entire families sit on pickup trucks. Itīs mindblowingly beautiful once you hit the country side.
Nederburg is located just below the Draakenberg (Dragon mountains) in a lush valley. Funny that we all can understand the Africaan language, there are plenty of words that make perfect sense in Swedish. Then again, Dutch is quite easy until they start speaking...
We were welcomed by the Nederburg owners and their lovely Boxer puppy. Nina tried several times to steal the dog, which well could have been the cutest puppy weīve ever seen. All brown and furry, a little whimpsy and clumpsy just like 10 week old puppies are.
The wine was fine indeed, but I had to take it real easy. The lack of sleep made me stumble and fumble and more than a sip of wine could lead to disaster.
Then on to this great restaurant I canīt recall the name of.
We got to dine in former Prime Minister De Kleerkīs private dining room, pretty cool I must say. An eight course dinner, specially composed for us. Later we go back at the hotel for some well needed sleep. I got a perfect view of the parking lot from my room!
The next day is Sunday and weīre having a day off. Paul is more than willing to take us on a road trip. I am very excited to check out Cape Point, but weīve also heard of a beach where one can swim with penguins! The band, make-up artist Thomas, hair stylist Francisco and David from Stockholm Records all get in the Volkswagen van and head south. We head south-east of the city towards False Bay, right behind the mighty Table mountains. The road is winding along the towering hillsides and we get to see some nice small towns by the sea. Donīt know if Iīd be very much into swimming here though. False Bay is known for being the biggest breeding place in the world for the Great White Shark...
After an hour or so, we arrive at Penguin beach! Nina, Bengt and David are all into swimming, the rest of us stay on firm ground and start looking for a place to have a beer...
The swimmers take a long time to get ready and Paul is getting a bit worried over Cape Point. He says the gates to the nature reserve close at 5.00. We still got some driving to do and I am getting a bit edgy.
Naturally we get down there 10 minutes late... I get sad and angry at pretty much everyone in the world. I decided to be grumpy for the rest of the trip, especially since none of the others seemed to care very much. No Cape Point for me then, major bummer in the African summer...
